چکیده

Cartograms are known for their ability to effectively map socio-economic data through distorting geographies, while it is generally assumed that conventional maps are the best way of showing geographical information correctly. However, cartograms are seldom adopted to map disease. Recent years have seen the development of several new forms of cartogram, but there are no clear signs as yet to suggest that they will become prominent in disease mapping. The principal purpose of this study is to examine the reasons why cartograms have not been widely utilised for disease mapping and to also explore feasible ways of encouraging the use of cartograms in disease mapping. To this end, a series of tasks have been undertaken: a thorough review of cartographic visualization methodology and the history of disease mapping, an experimental attempt to modify cartogram construction techniques, an online survey to collect users’ views about cartograms and disease mapping, an observation of the practical strategies adopted for developing cartograms in the Worldmapper project, and extensive discussion and analysis of current trends in cartogram construction techniques and disease mapping. The study confirms that the nature of cartograms limits their application because the inevitable distortions produced by cartograms render them unfamiliar, even unrecognizable, to map readers and even cartographers. If the use of cartograms is to be promoted, they must be more readily understood. First, production techniques must be refined to produce cartograms that offer minimal levels of distortion; second, effective instructions must be supplied to teach users how to read them; and third, varied general education about new visual thinking must be carried out in order to encourage a wider use of cartograms in the future.

Dot map cartograms for detection of infectious disease outbreaks: an application to Q fever, the Netherlands and pertussis, Germany

Geographical mapping of infectious diseases is an important tool for detecting and characterising outbreaks. Two common mapping methods, dot maps and incidence maps, have important shortcomings. The former does not represent population density and can compromise case privacy, and the latter relies on pre-defined administrative boundaries. We propose a method that overcomes these limitations: do...

Rectangular Hierarchical Cartograms for Socio-Economic Data

We present rectangular hierarchical cartograms for mapping socio-economic data. These density-normalising cartograms size spatial units by population, increasing the ease with which data for densely populated areas can be visually resolved compared to more conventional cartographic projections. Their hierarchical nature enables the study of spatial granularity in spatial hierarchies, hierarchic...

Re-Mapping the World’s Population

www.esri.com The Worldmapper project has successfully produced a series of maps to visualize data concerning a range of issues facing the modern world based on the idea of density-equalizing maps. With this approach, ArcGIS 9.3 plays a crucial role as an interface to convert suitable raster datasets and produce updated cartograms. The data is converted using ArcMap’s ArcToolbox, while the carto...

Cartogram Visualization for Bivariate Geo-Statistical Data

We describe bivariate cartograms, a technique specifically designed to allow for the simultaneous comparison of two geo-statistical variables. Traditional cartograms are designed to show only a single statistical variable, but in practice, it is often useful to show two variables (e.g., the total sales for two competing companies) simultaneously. We illustrate bivariate cartograms using Dorling...

Visualizing statistical significance of disease clusters using cartograms

BACKGROUND Health officials and epidemiological researchers often use maps of disease rates to identify potential disease clusters. Because these maps exaggerate the prominence of low-density districts and hide potential clusters in urban (high-density) areas, many researchers have used density-equalizing maps (cartograms) as a basis for epidemiological mapping. However, we do not have existing...
